Musical 80s night launched in Draiocht.

Friday, December 18th, 2009

It’s time to grab those lurid fluorescent costumes, ladies put on those the shoulder pads and men, hairspray that mullet and get down to Draíocht for a slice of eighties nostalgia!

“Think Grease in the eighties!” commented CYMS founder and director John Cryan. “In these economic times, this will be a great antidote to all the doom and gloom surrounding us. It’s time to shake off those recessionary blues and embrace the upbeat music of the eighties.”

The newly formed Clonsilla Youth Musical Society will be reliving the sights and sounds of this rather peculiar decade in a musical called Back to the 80s. The production will run for three nights at the Blanchardstown venue this month and will feature such classics as Footloose and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, as the story centers on the lives of the graduation class of William Ocean High School.

John is of course a highly popular teacher at St. Mochta’s National School, as well as being a local thespian of some note, performing everything from serious drama to pantomime dames in his varied career to date. He started CYMS this year largely due to the success of two shows that the school put on in recent years – Raise the Curtain (2007) and Joseph (2008)

“The two shows that we put on were brilliant,” he says, “but of course, once these highly talented pupils had left the school, there had no opportunity to participate in further musicals.

“When I first broached the proposal to form a youth musical society from, mainly but not uniquely, past pupils of St. Mochta’s, the response was overwhelming. We have been very fortunate to have such a highly talented group of young people available for our first production and they are loving it.”

Indeed, with a cast of over fifty drawn from local secondary schools, musical direction by the famous Caitríona Ní Threasaigh and choreography from Mr. Peter Pan himself Mark Rogers, Back to the 80s promises to be a spectacular debut from this new troupe and a surefire way to kick start the Christmas season.

Back to the 80s by Clonsilla Youth Musical Society plays Draíocht’s main auditorium for three nights from Monday 14th to Wednesday 16th December at 8pm.

Tickets are €18 / €15.

My invitation to Innovation Dublin

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

I was delighted to be invited back to visit Designing 21st century team's Dublin offices last Saturday morning to view the latest status of their project 'Designing Dublin : Learning to Learn' in Clongriffin as part of Dublin city Innovation week.

The Design 21st century team consist of members with various backgrounds working on the project including Jean, Jim, Vannesa and Deirdre Murphy the main founder.

For the pilot, The Designing Dublin project team had a wonderful team of 17 multi-disciplinary members who have been tasked with ‘Finding the Hidden Potential of Place’ in Clongriffin – a new residential area on Dublin city’s North Fringe.

As part of Innovation week, selected individuals, including myself, were asked to give their opinions on the main progress and concept plan so far from 14th Oct-21st Oct.

According to the Design 21st century co- founder, Deirdre Murphy, when I asked her about the project so far, she told me that 'we have learnt to be curious about the area and its community through visiting, researching, listening and discovering. We have identified key areas which we feel hold the hidden potential of Clongriffin, and through processes co-designed with a group of Kaospilots from Denmark who spent a week with us, we have tested these areas and learning'.

I am delighted to inform readers that the project was gone from strength to strength from the ideas generation panel that I attended last June to today's huge progress to drawing up a comprehensive drawing plan upon consultation with Dublin city council.

The event itself last Saturday involved 'Poster Brains' a imaginative activity for invited people to draw or sketch a positive, visionary scenerio as well as proto storming, which could be used as a suggestion or idea to be worked on further as a practical concept.

I enjoyed talking to Luke, one of the project team about business opportunities and also the actual Poster Brain drawings although my art work is not the best.

Northside Open Coffee Dublin event cancelled

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I have given some thought to this, and have decided to finish up 'the Northside Open Coffee Dublin' event.

My reason is that I am returning to study commerce in UCC and cannot offer the same time and commitment as I would like to continue with the Northside event from here on in.

If any body else is interested in taking over the event from me, please let me know via email or twitter account.

Ireland/China I.T technologies conference in NUI Maynooth

Friday, August 21st, 2009

I attended the recent Ireland/China international conference on I.T and communications technology conference held this week from the 19th to the 21st August in NUI Maynooth college.

The conference run for three half days and was very well organized and interesting with very diverse research and academic presentations given by students from China as well as Ireland.

The conference aims are to strengthen science and technology research collaboration among China, Ireland and other countries and also to provide a platform for facilitating academic and industrial research interaction. CIICT2009 continues this regular series of conferences.

The first CIICT conference was hosted by Hangzhou Dianzi University in October 2006. The 2007 CIICT conference was hosted in Dublin City University, Ireland. The 2008 CIICT conference was hosted by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

This year, it was Ireland's turn to host the annual conference from China and NUIM were honored to present. CIICT is being organised at NUI Maynooth by the Department of Computer Science in association with Sino-Ireland Joint Research and Education Centre, the Department of Electronic Engineering National Center for Geo computation, and the Institute of Microelectronics and Wireless Systems.

Some of the keynote speakers included :
Chris Horn, China Crest Professionals (formerly director of Iona Technology)
Yuan Liu, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications - Multiple RF circuits
Levent Onural, Bilkent University - 3D Imaging Systems
Rick Middleton, Hamilton Institute, NUI Maynooth -
Martha Rotter, Microsoft Ireland - Lighting up the Web: next generation experiences .

I know Martha Rotter through my own involvement with the Open Coffee Dublin networking event, and enjoyed her presentation about Microsoft and their next generation of services platform, Silverlight.

I personally cannot wait until the next years event in China.

Details of this years program are here.

Finally, some examples of papers accepted are available here to get an idea of the range of topics covered in the conference.

Allotment sold

Monday, August 17th, 2009

It is with sad news that I have to announce that I have sold all my existing allotment plots that I had originally bought in Beechpark allotments in Clonsilla, D15.

I got rid of the investments after I realized how much work and effort was actually involved in maintaining the plots, as well as more investment was needed. I sold my two investments on to other parties while last week, and then after last week, I sold my own original allotment on to another contact who was delighted to take it off my hands.

The other thing is that one must have a definite plan of action to plant before June ends and then harvest the results by End of August/Mid September in order to reap the benefits.

The reason that I sold the allotments was stated above, and turned out not to be a good investment in terms of value but the main lesson learned here was that one must have a love for the land and passion for all things green for this pastime to be enjoyed. The other reason was the need to finance myself for my trip shortly to Shanghai, China next week. I feel that the problems with heavy rainfall over the next few years in Ireland in the summer due to Climate change, and weeds sprouting along with other blight problems will also pose a threat for farmers/allotments in the long term.

I did enjoy the original planting and tending work involved, but feel that a plan of strategy and need for constant supervision is a must given the limited time frame with good planting season during the Irish summer and time commitments. That is where I most learned my lesson and would advise my readers to think about.
