There is considerable concern over the future plans not to redevelop Luttrellstown Golf Course.
A spokesman for the luxury golf resort which reopened three years ago after an initial 20 million euro face lift is financially crippled and 'no longer sustainable' according to local sources.
I suppose this type of news is not that surprising given the economic downturn but leads me to wonder what they will do with all that land which is to be left lying barren there. God knows that there is a lot of land left now! There are no current plans to redevelop at this stage and this is partly due to financial restraints. However, the actual hotel section itself is in no longer of closing.
I think the owners should consider all those people who are waiting on allotment waiting lists for over 2 years in some cases. There is a huge demand for free development land which has not been bought by property developers for their own re-zoning use currently. The only alternative to council controlled land being allocated to the public through a lottery system is renting land through a private landlord for a year and paying for maintenance.
Why not let out these plots of land at Luttrellstown out to locals looking for an allotment while setting aside some of the spare land for some other green residential use or even better, water storage unit. The reality is that people are looking to be self sustain in growing their own food locally and the local businessman such as JP McManus, John Magnier and Aidan Brooks could give something back to the community and still earn a little revenue on the side. This may be through a section devoted to allotments for private letting and the other section for council allocation. There would still be space put a side for any other residential/commerical units that they wanted to build in a year's time.
Recent food security concerns due to global prices and commodity factors for a hedge against the future make this a smart move, particularly against rising inflation and increasing concerns regarding the attempted stimulus package in Europe.
